Micron first to develop PCIe Gen6 data center SSD
Ecosystems are important in many walks of life, and vitally important in the technology world. To enable the PCIe Gen6 ecosystem, Micron has developed the industry’s first PCIe Gen6 SSD, once again showcasing its storage technology leadership. This follows our recent announcement of the world's fastest data center SSD, the Micron 9550 NVMe™ SSD, further bolstering Micron’s leadership position in AI storage. In the dynamic data center workload landscape, the demand for faster storage is growing at an extraordinary pace. As evidenced by the pace at which new PCIe generational specifications have been published, the need for higher performing PCIe devices is accelerating.
Alvaro Toledo, vice president and general manager of Micron's Data Center Storage group, commented: "AI and other data-intensive workloads are driving the need for higher performance storage in the data center. Our development of the industry’s first PCIe Gen6 SSD for ecosystem enablement is designed to meet these growing future demands, providing unprecedented speed for our customers’ highest-throughput workloads."
The PCIe Gen6 ecosystem in AI will be propelled by the rapid growth of data-intensive workloads and the demand for faster results. AI applications often require immense computational power and rapid data access to function efficiently. A PCIe Gen6 technology ecosystem, offering unprecedented speed and seamless interoperability, is essential for enabling rapid data transfer across the network and between storage and GPUs.
Our PCIe Gen6 demonstration exceeds 26GB/s for sequential reads, an early milestone that sets a new bar for SSD performance. As the leader in this emerging technology, Micron’s success will further promote the possibilities of PCIe Gen6 for data center workloads.
