New Sharp AQUOS R5G Smartphone Supports 8K Video

Sharp on Monday made available the specifications of its new smartphone that will operate on the 5G network that is set to launch in Japan this spring.

The Osaka-based company said its Aquos R5G handset will be capable of shooting 8K video and reproducing 1 billion colors on its 6.5-inch Pro IGZO liquid crystal display. In addition, the screen supports a maximum brightness of 1,000cd / m2. The "HDR enhancer" function automatically adjusts the brightness according to the content and maintains a balance of high visibility and low power consumption.

Using the cameras, users can you can shoot still images and videos with 8K resolution at wide 120° angles. In addition to the standard 12.2-megapixel camera, a telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and a ToF camera that blurs the background of moving images are available. By driving the smartphone's all four cameras at the same time, you can shoot still images and moving images simultaneously, and also shoot portraits that make the subject stand out by blurring the background.

The smartphone also supports an AI function that automatically recognizes people and pets (dogs and cats) in the video. Users can zoom at these regions of the video and playback them in zoom.

The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G mobile platform and has 12GB RAM /256GB ROM.

Japan's major telecommunication carriers, KDDI Corp. and SoftBank Corp. plan to start 5G services around March. NTT Docomo Inc has said it will introduce 5G in spring.
