Toshiba Releases Surveillance 6TB HDDs, 20 TB and 10-Platter Drives On the Way

Toshiba Releases Surveillance 6TB HDDs, 20 TB and 10-Platter Drives On the Way

PC components Dec 3,2019 0

Toshiba announced the DT02-V Series of Surveillance HDDs, its new series created for digital video recorder (DVR) and network video recorder (NVR) platforms.

The new series utilizes the latest magnetic recording technologies to achieve high areal density, helping to improve reliability compared to the prior MD04ABA-V Series. With up to 6TB capacity, the new DT02-V Series supports a maximum of 32 high-resolution camera streams and is suitable for use in surveillance DVR and NVR platforms with as many as eight drive bays.

The DT02-V Series is designed for 24/7 operation at HDD temperatures as high as 40ᵒC for 600,000 load/unload cycles, at rated workload of 180TB a year. Other features include a SATA 6Gbit/s interface4 with a 128MiB cache to help minimizing frame drops, and a mechanical platform designed to achieve a 1 million-hour MTTF.

The DT02-V Series 4TB samples are available from today, 6TB samples will be planned from Jan 2020, and a 2TB sample is expected to be available in March 2020.

Expanding HDD Production

Seperately, Toshiba has announced plans to increase its HDD production capacity, expanding one of its plants in Philippines to increase output of high-end helium-filled enterprise and nearline HDDs.

The company’s HDD products are dominated by client HDDs, with enterprise drives accounting for about a third of it. While Toshiba controls about 36% of the global mobile HDD shipments, it only has around 17% of the enterprise/nearline market. As a result, Toshiba is looking to make changes to capture more of the nearline market.

Toshiba plans to increase the share of enterprise/nearline HDDs starting from April 1, 2021, shifting away from client drives and towards nearline drives. The Japanese company aims at capturing an ‘over 20%’ share of the global enterprise/nearline HDD market while maintaining its share of the client HDD market at around 25%.

Toshiba plans to use shingled magnetic recording (SMR) and energy assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) technologies (MAMR, HAMR) to boost areal density. The company’s roadmap also includes drives with 10 platters (up from nine today).

The company’s roadmap also includes a 20 TB HDD as soon as FY2021. And, going forward, all of Toshiba's leading-edge hard drives will be helium-filled.
